Town hall recording and thoughts on what should be next

The recording of our town hall on February 23 (see program here) is available to watch on YouTube.

At the conclusion of the event, we asked the audience “What actions would you suggest or like to see going forward?” Here are the unedited and uncut responses:

In person events privilege Halifax. More online please • all the groups being targeted by this govt NEED to come together and stand up to this government. Read the examiner article on Tim’s enemies. Let’s all come together. • Bring out to the public everything that is highly questionable that this board, namely the provost is doing. We’re not greenland • it was suggested to us today that we write to our MLAs… • All university Faculty Associations/Unions should rejoin ANSUT for a unified voice. • Have strategy sessions to plan and consider our levers? • Work WITH the administration not striking against it, but work against the common tribulation: the province. • Show the public the impact of using resources to do these reviews rather than the academic mission. • More action and less panels. While interesting, the panels just present the situation. This is useful once but concerted action need to follow. • Striking is our strongest option. • Initiate a democratic and collegial process to replace this board • We need more than just talking. More than just critique. We need strategic collective action. Our power is our labour. • Revolutionary mass strike and actions for building capacity for such. • START TALKING. LOUDLY. EVERYWHERE. ALL THE TIME. • I love Chelsea’s suggestion of drawing in people’s personal experience. This shouldn’t be a matter of “us” and “them” of academia and the public, respectively, but something that affects us all in a connective way, including the environment and our non-human relations. • Would love to see folks attend the upcoming Shoulder-to-Shoulder Rally on March 3 against the many unilateral actions the current provincial govt is taking • Make parents of incoming students scared their kids program lift dry up If you’re faculty, talk to parents of high school students, they can get interested in this. Make a list of who you know Collective action and targeted refusal to do certain tasks or other futile exercises • Acadia university, st FX, Saint Anne, those communities are small enough that a university has a profound impact on the local economy, and also small enough that they can reach large numbers of people/voters within those communities • Linking the threats of bill 12 to other attacks on our social fabric by this government (fracking, cuts to arts funding, cuts to wildlife department etc) • Engage with Nova Scotia business community: do they trust politicians to improve Universities in NS? They surely need to speak up for education. • Definitely emphasize the “elbows down” nature of the Huron contract and some of it’s supporters on campus. • Toolkit to act in solidarity with Cocogov and other unis, at multiple levels (in our faculties, day-to-day, public, etc.) • More panels like today’s panel - and the Zoom format ended up working great. There has been so much interest and lots of amazing questions that there will be no time to answer. • Admin pushing back against government • We need to see the initial rankings of programs that has already been completed • How do we make these administrators start standing up for their universities? How is this leadership? • I would like bullet points about Dal’s impact in teaching, research dollars, contributions to the economy, etc. a social media campaign co led by students and faculty? • No question, but please mention the provincial awareness campaign the all universities are welcome to join! Interested? Reach out to Teresa at teresa.workman@ansut.ca • Collective action. Labour action. Faculty, student, and staff strike actions. • Greater sharing of information between universities to increase awareness of the process and how it is unfolding across the province.
